How Stakeholder Capitalism, CBDCs, and Net-Zero Finance Could Strip Canadians of Their Freedom
The urgent themes discussed here are expanded on in our #1 international best-selling book It Starts With Gold™, co-authored by Peter J. Merrick and Adrian C. Spitters. In the book, we reveal how financial systems are collapsing and how individuals can prepare before it is too late. Visit www.ItStartsWithGold.com.
Mark Carney has emerged as one of the most powerful architects of global economic transformation. His book Value(s): Building a Better World for All outlines his belief that financial systems must be radically overhauled. On the surface, Carney promotes fairness, sustainability, and stakeholder accountability. Beneath the slogans lies an alarming blueprint that threatens to place Canadians under unprecedented financial control.
Carney’s career has spanned the highest levels of central banking and global finance. Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Carney served as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, and then Governor of the Bank of England until 2020. He chaired the Financial Stability Board and previously served as UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance and as co-chair of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), both of which he stepped down from upon becoming Prime Minister of Canada in early 2025. As of May 2025, Carney serves as the Prime Minister of Canada, focusing his agenda on national economic restructuring and climate-aligned policies domestically.
The Rise of Stakeholder Capitalism
Carney’s belief in stakeholder capitalism sounds benign. The concept proposes that companies should serve not just shareholders, but employees, communities, and the environment. Yet this vision opens the door to a dangerous form of economic gatekeeping. Under stakeholder capitalism, access to credit and capital could become contingent upon companies proving compliance with politically defined environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics.
Small businesses and independent thinkers who do not or cannot meet the ever-changing ESG rules risk exclusion. Stakeholder capitalism empowers the unelected elite in financial and regulatory circles to impose ideological compliance under the banner of progress. It sets a precedent for surveillance, control, and social engineering through financial penalties.
Central Bank Digital Currencies: The Ultimate Control Tool
Few Canadians realize how closely Carney is tied to the global push for Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). As early as his 2019 Jackson Hole speech, Carney suggested replacing the US dollar’s dominance with a synthetic global digital currency, managed by central banks.
CBDCs offer governments the ability to track every transaction. Every purchase, donation, or transfer could be monitored, recorded, and controlled in real time. Unlike cash, which provides privacy and freedom, CBDCs create the infrastructure for total financial surveillance.
Carney claims CBDCs will enhance efficiency and stability. In truth, they offer the ultimate tool of compliance enforcement. Governments could easily impose fines, freeze accounts, deny access to goods and services, or restrict spending for those who dissent from the prevailing agenda. Canadians would no longer own their money. They would merely be granted conditional use of a government-controlled ledger.
Net-Zero Climate Finance and Economic Authoritarianism
Carney is also the leading global enforcer of net-zero finance. Through GFANZ, Carney has corralled over 500 financial firms representing more than $130 trillion in assets to commit to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
This vast alliance wields its power through capital allocation. Industries deemed incompatible with the UN’s climate goals risk being cut off from lending, insurance, and investment. Canadian energy producers, mining companies, transportation firms, and manufacturers face extinction if they fail to meet these externally imposed targets.
This is not voluntary. The Canadian federal government, under Carney’s ideological influence, has already embedded similar objectives in the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act. What Canadians are witnessing is the financial deindustrialization of their country under the banner of climate responsibility.
Carney’s approach ignores the devastating consequences of forced economic transitions. Thousands of Canadian jobs in energy, agriculture, and manufacturing are at risk. Provinces dependent on resource extraction will be decimated. Rural communities that do not conform to “green” metrics face the withdrawal of credit and investment, making life unsustainable outside of large urban centres.
Canada as the Testing Ground
The most chilling aspect of Carney’s plan is the speed at which Canada is being positioned as the global prototype. Carney has deep connections within the Bank of Canada, the federal government, and the private financial sector.
Canada is not merely complying with global rules. It is being used to pioneer them. Canadians could be the first population to experience the full combination of stakeholder capitalism, CBDC rollout, ESG compliance monitoring, and net-zero finance enforcement.
This convergence of policies represents the perfect infrastructure for a digital control grid. Carney’s framework centralizes decision-making under a small circle of regulators, financial institutions, and bureaucrats who are unaccountable to voters.
The Collapse of the Middle Class and Erosion of Democracy
Carney’s globalist restructuring threatens the last remaining pillars of Canadian prosperity. Independent businesses, family farms, resource industries, and private investors will be forced to comply or close.
The result is a dramatic shift of assets and power from ordinary Canadians into the hands of transnational institutions. It eliminates personal financial sovereignty and individual choice in favour of mandated collective outcomes.
Even more concerning, these policies sideline democracy itself. Carney’s model places key decisions about credit access, investment priorities, and consumer rights in the hands of technocrats and unelected bodies. Political opposition becomes irrelevant if the levers of the economy are beyond public control.
What Canadians Must Understand
The agenda outlined in Value(s) is being quietly and methodically implemented. Canadians must wake up to what is unfolding behind the curtain. The language of sustainability, fairness, and values is being used to mask a rapid dismantling of free market principles and individual liberty.
We do not dispute that the world faces environmental and economic challenges. However, no crisis justifies the introduction of a permanent financial surveillance state or a global compliance grid. Canadians should demand solutions that preserve freedom, personal privacy, and true democracy.
Our book, It Starts With Gold™, is dedicated to providing individuals with strategies to protect their wealth and sovereignty from the dystopian system being constructed around them. Physical precious metals, private real assets, and independent discretionary portfolio management and wealth planning remain critical defences against the global capture of personal assets.
Carney’s blueprint is real, it is advancing, and Canada has become its proving ground.
