How Dirty Money Gets Cleaned

Let us talk about something most people never think about. It is called money laundering. That is when criminals or terrorists take money earned from illegal activity and make it look like it came from honest work.
They do this in three main steps.
Step One: Placement This is the first and riskiest part. It is where the dirty money gets pushed into the system, often through banks or cash businesses.
To avoid getting caught, the criminal breaks up a large pile of money into many smaller amounts. They might send people to different banks or stores to deposit or spend just under the amount that would trigger questions. This trick is called smurfing. It is like using a group of tiny messengers to sneak the money in without getting noticed.
Step Two: Layering Once the money is inside the system, it gets moved through different accounts, countries, or fake companies. The goal is to make it hard to trace. It is like mixing dirty water into clean water until you cannot tell the difference.
Step Three: Integration Now the money comes out looking clean. It might be used to buy homes, invest in businesses, or pay salaries. On paper, it looks like legal money. In truth, it came from crime.
Here is a real example.
A terrorist group sells weapons on the black market. They earn millions in cash. They cannot just deposit it into a bank. So they use placement by breaking the money into small amounts and smurfing it through many hands and places. Then they move it around through fake charities and shell companies. This is layering. In the end, they use the money to buy buildings or pay for operations. That is integration. The money looks clean. The system has no idea what just happened.
This is happening today. It affects the economy. It funds harm. It hides in plain sight.
