Digital ID, Programmable Money, and the New Control Grid
By Peter J. Merrick, TEP® and Adrian C. Spitters, CFP®, co-authors of the international bestseller It Starts With Gold™ and the forthcoming Killing Crypto™
This article explores a growing debate about the global digital identity and programmable money movement. It is presented as an opinion intended to inform and invite dialogue.
Governments and financial institutions are building a system of digital control that replaces freedom with permission. It’s time to understand the plan and prepare.
How freedom is being replaced by permission
Governments and large institutions are building digital frameworks that link identity, payments, and compliance into one powerful system. These programs are not isolated projects. They are connected pieces of a much larger structure that is being built quietly around us. At its core, it is not about efficiency, safety, or convenience. It is about control.
The dream of every technocrat has always been the same: total visibility into every person’s life. A world where participation in society depends on obedience. It begins with digital identity, expands through surveillance, tightens through artificial intelligence, and locks in through programmable money. Together, these create a control grid that determines who works, who travels, who eats, and who speaks.
This control grid rests on five pillars: digital identification, biometric verification, mass surveillance, social credit scoring, and programmable money. Each pillar reinforces the others, building a cage that appears invisible until the door closes. These technologies promise convenience but deliver control.

The foundation of technocratic control
The global push for digital identification is being sold as progress. Citizens are told it will simplify travel, prevent fraud, and make life easier. But beneath the marketing is a stark reality. When identity becomes digital, it becomes conditional.
The United Kingdom has already announced a mandatory digital ID tied to employment. Without one, people will not be allowed to work. The European Union is preparing similar programs linked to banking, healthcare, and mobility. Australia and Canada are testing identical frameworks.
Digital ID is the key that opens every door. It is also the switch that can close them. Once society accepts a system that decides who can access money, healthcare, or transportation, the meaning of freedom changes forever.
Biometric data: your body becomes your password
Digital ID would not function without biometrics. Fingerprints, facial scans, and voice patterns are already being tied to bank accounts, airports, and social media. In some countries, citizens cannot open a bank account without scanning their faces.
In Vietnam, more than 80 million accounts were frozen because users failed to upload their biometric data. Similar programs are now spreading through Europe under the label of “border modernization.” A photograph and four fingerprints will soon be mandatory to enter or leave the European Union.
This is not progress. It is the construction of a global database that knows your face, your movement, and your daily habits. The convenience of unlocking your phone with your face has become the testing ground for normalizing surveillance. Your body has become your password.
The rise of permanent surveillance
Track-and-trace systems are no longer limited to criminals. They now include everyone. Police departments, immigration agencies, and private companies are deploying artificial intelligence software that can identify people, vehicles, and behaviour in real time.
Artificial intelligence is already being used to analyze live video feeds, predict behaviour, and assign “risk scores” to citizens. The danger is not only that humans are being monitored, but that algorithms are making moral judgments once reserved for law and conscience. A machine does not understand mercy or justice.
Palantir Technologies, a company known for its deep ties to military intelligence, has built an “immigration operating system” that tracks the movements of migrants across the United States. Officials claim it improves safety. But as history shows, every system built to track one group eventually expands to include everyone.
After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Patriot Act was introduced to stop terrorists. Within years, the same surveillance tools were being used against ordinary citizens. Every generation has been told that new forms of control were temporary, wartime censorship, emergency powers, or surveillance to stop terrorism. Yet none of those controls were ever rolled back.
Today, governments say digital ID is needed to prevent illegal immigration and cybercrime. Tomorrow, it will be used to monitor dissent.
Social credit systems: rewards for compliance, punishment for resistance
In China, the full version of this system already exists. Every citizen’s actions are tracked and scored. Their behavior determines whether they can buy a train ticket, access healthcare, or enroll their children in school.
People with “low trust scores” are banned from flights and public transit. Their faces are displayed on billboards as a warning to others. Citizens are rewarded for reporting their neighbors. Cameras follow their every step, recording not just what they buy, but how often they smile in public.
China’s leaders call it “a model for social harmony.” But it is a digital dictatorship disguised as order. This is the direction the Western world is heading unless citizens draw a firm line and refuse to comply.
Programmable money: the final step of control
Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are being rolled out as the final pillar of the control grid. These digital currencies are not like cash or even credit cards. They can be programmed, restricted, and deactivated by central banks at will.
Every transaction is traceable. Governments can decide where, when, and how citizens spend their money. Funds can expire, limiting how long they remain usable. Spending can be restricted to approved products or locations. If your social credit score drops, your digital wallet can be shut off instantly.
This is already happening. China’s digital yuan is fully traceable. In Canada, the government froze the bank accounts of truckers during peaceful protests. In Vietnam, millions were cut off from their own savings. These examples prove the danger of giving institutions total control over financial access.
Tokenization: ownership without control
The next evolution of this system is called tokenization. The term sounds harmless, even exciting. It refers to converting real assets, homes, cars, businesses, and even artwork, into digital tokens recorded on a blockchain.
In theory, tokenization allows faster transactions and easier recordkeeping. In practice, it centralizes control. When assets are tokenized, they can be tracked, frozen, or reassigned with a single command. Ownership becomes conditional. If you say or do something the system disapproves of, access to your property can vanish with a keystroke.
The goal is not transparency. It is obedience. The more parts of life that are digitized, the easier it becomes for central authorities to enforce compliance.
The illusion of safety and the trap of convenience
The argument for digital ID and programmable money is built on fear. Politicians and global organizations tell citizens that these systems will protect them from fraud, pandemics, misinformation, and climate change.
But fear is the oldest tool of control. When people are afraid, they trade freedom for safety. They surrender power for convenience. The same people who promised to protect the public from terrorism are now using the same logic to justify the digital ID grid.
The pattern never changes. First comes the problem. Then the reaction. Then the solution. The result is always more surveillance, less freedom, and more power for those who already control the system.
Every generation has seen this pattern before. Each new crisis brings a new promise of protection. And each time, freedom is the first casualty.
The global rollout and the Western experiment
The United Nations, the World Economic Forum, and major global banks have all endorsed digital ID and Central Bank Digital Currency initiatives. Programs are being tested across Europe, Asia, and North America under the promise of modernization and inclusion.
In Canada, the federal government has been developing its own Digital Identity and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC) strategy in partnership with major banks through the Verified.Me network. These institutions already hold the keys to financial access for most Canadians, and under a future Central Bank Digital Currency system, their partnership with government could turn compliance into a condition for participation.
The Bank of Canada has also been expanding its Payments Modernization pilot programs in coordination with DIACC and major banks, preparing for a potential digital loonie.
In the United States, the Federal Reserve continues its research into a digital dollar.
It has advanced pilot testing through Project Hamilton under the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Digital Currency Initiative, as part of its Novel Activities Supervision Program.
In the European Union, the European Central Bank is accelerating the digital euro.
Australia’s Reserve Bank has also completed its first national Central Bank Digital Currency pilot, signalling early readiness for a digital Australian dollar.
These systems are spreading through city networks such as the C40 Cities initiative. Under the banner of “climate responsibility,” cities like New York, Toronto, and Vancouver are aligning with international policies that limit meat consumption, private vehicle ownership, and travel. Each rule is enforced through data and digital verification.
The spiritual dimension of the control grid
The digital control grid is not only a political or financial issue. It is a moral one. It tests whether humanity will choose freedom or submission.
At its heart, technocracy seeks to replace conscience with code. It treats human beings as data points to be managed. The architects of this system believe that safety, efficiency, and sustainability matter more than liberty, faith, or dignity. But a world where every action is monitored and every purchase is approved is not sustainable. It is inhuman.
Freedom cannot coexist with constant permission. Once society accepts that rights can be turned on or off, they are no longer rights. They are privileges.
Building resilience and refusing to comply
There is still time to resist. The most powerful act of defiance is noncompliance. The system only works if people accept it. Each person who refuses to scan a digital ID, who buys directly from local farmers, and who holds wealth outside of digital networks weakens the control grid.
Families, farmers, and entrepreneurs can build parallel systems, communities that operate on trust and tangible value rather than digital permission. Owning real assets like land, gold, and silver restores independence. Supporting small local businesses keeps wealth in human hands instead of digital ones.
Every great turning point in history has begun with a small group of people who refused to comply. Freedom does not vanish in one act; it erodes when people surrender piece by piece. The courage to say no, to refuse the digital leash, has always been the beginning of every movement that restored human dignity.
Resilience begins with awareness. The next step is preparation. Build relationships with people who share your values. Support independent farmers. Hold assets that cannot be deleted. Speak truth, even when silence seems easier.
The future is still ours to choose
History has shown that every system built to control people eventually collapses under its own weight. Human freedom is stronger than any code or algorithm. But survival will depend on those who see what is coming and take action before choice disappears.
The road ahead is not easy, but it is still open. The most powerful weapon against control is awareness, community, and ownership. The technocrats can only govern those who consent. Refuse consent, and their power ends.
Protecting freedom begins with protecting ownership. The same system designed to track every transaction is also designed to absorb every asset. Securing real, tangible wealth outside that system is not just a financial choice; it is an act of independence.
Precious metals remain the foundation of true independence
When currencies become programmable and assets become tokenized, only physical gold and silver remain outside the system’s reach. They are the last assets that cannot be tracked, frozen, or rewritten by code.
Throughout history, every financial empire that replaced sound money with digital or paper promises eventually collapsed under its own control mechanisms. Gold and silver have always survived not because they are nostalgic relics, but because they are the only form of money that exists beyond permission.
Owning physical precious metals is not speculation. It is self-defence. It is the anchor of freedom in a world where everything else is becoming programmable.
Freedom begins with ownership. Security begins with understanding what you truly own.
