Greek Legend of Icarus: Inheritance and the Corruption of Comfort

Not long ago, I came across a chart titled “Self-Made vs. Inherited Wealth – The Global Billionaire Breakdown.” At a glance, it seemed simple… blue bars for individuals who had built their own wealth… red for those who had inherited it. I have seen hundreds of charts like this before, but something in this one stayed with me.

After more than thirty-three years working in succession planning, estate design, and cross-border risk mitigation, I no longer view charts as just data. I see patterns… consequences… stories behind individual personalities who shaped their futures or lost them.

I was not born into wealth. I had no family connections in high finance. What I have today did not come from inheritance, but from curiosity… a drive to understand, to question, and to serve. I have had the privilege to sit across from self-made billionaires, family business owners, and professionals facing real, difficult choices. I have come to treasure the trust they placed in me. I was not handed this role. I was invited in… and I have never taken that invitation for granted.

When I began, there were no formal study tracks for what I do now. Succession and cross-border wealth preservation were undefined disciplines. That is why I started writing. Writing became my tool for learning… a way to observe, reflect, and preserve what I encountered. Over time, I realized that I am, at my core, a scribe.

Historically, scribes served as the quiet stewards of civilization. They recorded what others lived… they made meaning from events others forgot. That is what I do. I capture the hard-earned lessons of entrepreneurs, families, and wealth builders. I document what has worked… and what has quietly unravelled. I do this not to elevate myself, but to ensure those lessons are not lost.

Over the years, I have written three textbooks published by LexisNexis, authored over a thousand articles in outlets like Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and Dow Jones, and shared what I have learned as a lecturer at universities and professional forums. I have been shaped by mentors from both the professional world and the entrepreneurial trenches. Individuals who taught me that humility is the highest form of wisdom.

One truth has never changed… wealth does not corrupt. It removes friction. It strips away the resistance that often forces growth and maturity. When inheritance is given without preparation or purpose, it can quietly erode everything that was built. And that brings me to the ancient story of Icarus.

In the myth, Daedalus builds wings from wax and feathers so that he and his son Icarus can escape imprisonment. He warns Icarus not to fly too close to the sun… and not too close to the sea. But Icarus, exhilarated by the freedom of flight, ignores the warning. He flies higher… the wax melts… and he falls into the sea.

What many overlook is that Icarus did not make the wings. He did not understand what held them together. They were given to him… without the weight of responsibility. His failure was not pride… it was disconnection.

I have seen this same pattern play out in modern wealth transitions. Individuals receiving great gifts… but without the story, the preparation, or the wisdom to carry them. The result is often not a dramatic crash, but a slow unravelling. Silence replaces leadership. Assumptions replace planning. And legacy begins to slip away.

This story is not just a caution for inheritors. It is a direct warning to wealth builders. You must not assume that the business or the capital will teach your children what life taught you. You must be intentional about what you pass on.

I have seen firsthand what happens when founders fail to have the uncomfortable, meaningful conversations while there is still time. Wealth without guidance becomes weight.

This is why I hold the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation with such deep respect. And why I am proud to be part of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP)… a global organization of legal, financial, and trust professionals who work together to address the multi-jurisdictional, multi-generational, and multi-disciplinary nature of wealth transfer. STEP exists to protect not just wealth… but the families and values that stand behind it.
