The Last Currency Will Be You… You Are The Carbon…
By Peter J. Merrick, TEP® and Adrian C. Spitters, CFP®, co-authors of the international bestseller It Starts With Gold™ and the forthcoming book Guns, Gold & Land™
This analysis continues a series of long-form investigations published in The Merrick Spitters Reset Report™
What if the next currency isn’t money, it is you?
There are moments when you wake up, not just from sleep, but from a life you didn’t know you were living… until the veil lifts. That is where we found ourselves. Quietly, on a Wednesday evening, as we poured our drinks on opposite coasts, staring down the barrel of a question we could no longer ignore:
What happens when the last thing they monetize is the human being itself?
We wrote It Starts With Gold™ for a reason. It was never meant to be just a book. It was a warning disguised as a map. We knew something was coming, something global, something engineered. We wrote it for Canadians and Americans like us, people who still believe in sovereignty, in the sacredness of ownership, in the idea that privacy and freedom are not luxuries but birthrights.
That book became an international bestseller not because of marketing tricks or publishing favours, but because people are waking up. They know. Something is very, very wrong.
Our next book, The Last Asset Standing, is not a sequel so much as the next phase of a declaration. This new volume steps into the shadows behind the curtain, revealing what we believe is the final stage of global financial warfare.
If It Starts With Gold™ was the call to secure what is real gold, food, and community. The Last Asset Standing is the call to protect what they are really after: you.
And this is where it begins. With a digital prison so polished, so convenient, most will walk into it smiling.
CBDCs: Control Disguised as Convenience
For decades, the financial elite have claimed to steward the global economy. Today, they have stopped pretending. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in their 2024 briefing, makes it clear that Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) will allow unprecedented monitoring of citizen behaviour under the guise of privacy protection.
Read that again. Privacy, they say, must be “balanced” with data collection. Who gets to hold the scale?
This is not speculation. It is written on their letterhead.
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the bank of central banks, goes even further. In their own words, Central Bank Digital Currencies are not just about money. They are about reshaping the entire monetary system. Their 2021 Annual Economic Report is a sobering read if you understand the language. They speak of programmability.
That word may sound harmless. It is not.
Programmable money means restrictions. It means your currency could expire. It could be limited by geography. It could be blocked or reduced based on carbon footprint, vaccine status, or flagged opinions. Programmable money means your access to goods and services could be conditional on behavioural compliance.
Do not take our word for it. Read the documents. The links are below.
Digital ID, Social Scoring, and the End of Autonomy
Then there is the World Bank, wrapping it all in the language of inclusion. Their Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative tells us that over one billion people lack formal identification. That sounds like a humanitarian concern.
So they will fix it with digital identity systems tied to your finances, healthcare, location, and even your online speech.
Do you see where this goes?
Tie your money to your ID. Tie your ID to your behaviour. And you create a system that knows when you sleep, where you travel, what you eat, what you believe, and what you are willing to endure.
Once everything is tracked, everything can be taxed, denied, or restricted.
Even as far back as 2007, IEEE Spectrum warned about the murky ethics of implanted RFID chips. That was nearly two decades ago. And today, these chips are being sold as convenience—tap to pay, tap to enter, tap to verify. Thousands in Sweden already have them. Other governments are watching closely.
This is no longer about technology. It is about who controls it, and who is controlled through it.
The Illusion of Freedom in a Fully Digitized World
The World Economic Forum (WEF), through carefully curated narratives, accelerates this agenda. In their 2016 article, former Danish minister Ida Auken writes: “Welcome to 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better.” That line should send a chill through anyone who still values autonomy.
This is not satire. This is vision. A future of managed compliance, disguised as progress.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) issued their ethical standards on artificial intelligence in 2021, banning AI for mass surveillance and social scoring. That is the press release.
Meanwhile, the infrastructure for social scoring and biometric surveillance is accelerating across Western democracies. Research shows that many of these systems mirror those pioneered in China. But the West simply brands them differently, using the language of safety, efficiency, and inclusion.
The Rewriting of Freedom
When Peter was a boy, his father, a tax accountant, taught him that numbers do not lie.
- Now he sees that those in power do not need to lie. They simply redefine the terms.
- Privacy becomes protection. Ownership becomes extremis.m Dissent becomes disinformation
- And freedom? Freedom becomes conditional.
The Final Target: You
The Last Asset Standing poses a question no one else seems willing to ask out loud:
When fiat fails, when gold is restricted, when cash is criminalized, what remains?
The answer is here. It is you.
Your data. Your location. Your facial recognition. Your DNA. Your belief systems. Your friendships. Your diet. Your finances. Your browser history. Your compliance.
All of it becomes currency in the new system.
And here is the cruel brilliance of it: they do not have to force you. Most will comply willingly.
Because it is easier. Because convenience is the bribe. And comfort is the chain.
A New Chapter Begins
We believe that if you wait for the masses to wake up, it will be too late.
Those who prepare now—who unplug, who own gold, who build community, who learn to live offline—will become the outliers who endure the collapse and help rebuild what is real.
This is not about fantasy. It is about survival.
We do not write this from fear. We write this from clarity. Because while the darkness grows, so too does the chance for those who see it clearly to act decisively.
If you are reading this, you probably feel it too.
That suspicion that something about this world is manufactured. That leadership has become management. That education has become programming. That safety has become surveillance.
You are not crazy. You are not alone.
We wrote It Starts With Gold™ for people like you. And we are writing The Last Asset Standing because we believe you can still choose.
This is not about escaping the system. It is about outlasting it.
Because once your money, passport, health record, citizenship, energy use, and even your faith are digitized and tethered to your phone…
The last currency will not be gold or Bitcoin. It will be your submission. Or your refusal.
Choose wisely. The clock is ticking.
There Is Still Hope, But Only If We Act
We are not powerless.
We must expose what is happening, prepare for what is coming, and reclaim our right to own, save, and pass on what we have earned.
Speak. Organize. Prepare. Own what is real. Draw your line now, or there may be no line left to draw.
We explore these urgent themes in greater depth in our #1 international best-selling book, It Starts With Gold™, co-authored by Peter J. Merrick, TEP® and Adrian C. Spitters, CFP®.
In the book, we reveal how ownership of tangible assets, particularly physical gold, can protect you from the rising wave of financial control and taxation. We break down how to preserve wealth across generations, reduce your vulnerability to policy shocks, and restore financial sovereignty in a world that increasingly seeks to take it away.
