Why Spiritual Vampires Haunt Us
By Peter J. Merrick, TEP® and Adrian C. Spitters, CFP®, co-authors of the international bestseller It Starts With Gold™ and the forthcoming book Guns, Gold & Land™
This analysis continues a series of long-form investigations published in The Merrick Spitters Reset Report™
Bluma Zeigarnik was a Russian psychologist in the 1920s. While studying in Vienna, the capital of Austria, she noticed something peculiar in the cafés. The Viennese waiters could recall every unpaid order, yet once the bill was settled the memory disappeared. Finished tasks vanished. Unfinished ones stayed alive. This became known as the Zeigarnik effect. The human mind does not let go of what is incomplete. It circles back. It replays. It lingers.
I first learned of this in my fourth year of university, and I have carried it with me ever since. Some ideas fade quickly. This one has never left. It explained why a client who disappeared weighed more than ten who stayed. It explained why personal and romantic bonds that ended cleanly could be released, while those that ended in silence never seemed to die. A finished story dissolves. An unfinished one lingers.

This is where spiritual vampires thrive. They are not legends. They are people who drain what cannot be seen. They do not take blood. They drain time, attention, and peace. Their danger is not in what they take while they are present, but in what they leave undone when they are gone. A bridge never crossed. A door left ajar. A silence that grows louder with time.
The mind does not settle here. The harder it pushes away, the more it circles back. The louder it insists it does not matter, the more it proves that it does. You can call it finished, yet the unfinished whispers on. This is not weakness. It is design.
I have seen it in business, where unresolved conversations echo long after the deal is lost. I have seen it in relationships, where absence outlasts presence. What lingers is not failure. Failure ends. What lingers is the unfinished.
Spiritual vampires never close what they begin. They lean in, then retreat. They open doors, then refuse to walk through. Their strength lies not in what they gave, but in what they withheld.
The loop does not close on its own. It waits. It circles. It endures until someone ends it. Most never do.
Freedom is not found in waiting. It begins when the unfinished no longer demands finishing. When silence can remain silence. When the half-built bridge is left behind. That is when the loop ends. That is when strength returns.
