Somewhere in the middle of it all, a twenty-year marriage came to its quiet end. There were no headlines. Just space that had grown too wide to cross and meet in the middle. I didn’t rush to fill that space. I chose solitude these past three years.
This is what I’ve come to understand. When a man chooses solitude, not as escape but as a proving ground, he begins to forge something unshakable and unbreakable. The silence stops being something to endure… it becomes both a filter and a solid, unwavering footing. A man who draws strength from his own presence no longer negotiates with noise, fools and daily trivial nonsense. His solitude sets the standard.
Through his solitude, he learns to protect the foundation he has built… by falling down, refusing to stay down, and choosing not to remain on the sidelines in the most important game he will ever play… that of his own life. This slowly occurs through repetition, sacrifice, restraint, his own company, his own self-respect, his own counsel and his own internal peace. At that point, he no longer chases potential… no longer explains his worth… and no longer permits anyone to enter who might fracture what it took him years to make whole and complete.
My life is steady, and gratifying. It has taken me 56 years to arrive at something that sounds so simple… accepting myself. My life is definitely not perfect… but full in the ways that matter to me. The quiet suits me. I no longer feel the need to chase motion, fame, money, shiny worthless trinkets, people or attention. I am not waiting for someone to arrive and make me whole. That job is totally up to me.
I have learned to enjoy the rhythm of my own days, and the company I keep with myself. So now… whether someone enters through business, friendship, or something more intimate… they must bring a presence that enriches what is already working for me in my life. If not… I will remain here. Still… grounded… guarded… at peace… enjoying my own company… my own counsel… in solitude.
Neil understands that. That is why we sat across from each other today with ease. No rush to speak. No push to impress. Just two seasoned warriors who have gone to war on ourselves, have done the work and did not lose themselves in the process.
This morning, Neil gave me something without trying to give it. A moment that reminded me why the right company matters. Not for noise… not for distraction… but for reflection. He mirrored back the quiet strength I aim to live by.
We said goodbye without needing to explain the value of the time we just shared. And for me… that was more than enough.
As I reflect on my chosen solitude, I’ve come to understand this… the man who learns to enjoy his own company becomes untouchable and unbreakable, because nothing outside of him holds the power to complete him… or undo or destroy him.
