A Campaign Built on Fear
Mark Carney’s 2025 election campaign was dominated by one message: Canada was under threat. According to Carney, the United States under Donald Trump was preparing to annex Canada, breach our sovereignty, and collapse our economy through a wave of punishing tariffs.
Mainstream media parroted the message. Journalists framed the election not around housing, inflation, or affordability, but as a question of survival. Who could stand up to Trump? Who would “protect” Canada from its greatest ally?
Carney declared he would never meet Trump until Canadian sovereignty was fully respected. He insisted he would confront the U.S. President with strength and moral clarity.
Yet within days of winning, he was in the Oval Office, praising Trump’s intellect, negotiation skills, and even his analogies.
This is not a minor shift. This is proof of a deliberate campaign of deception.
The Interview That Exposed It All
Sky News Australia anchor Samantha Washington delivered what Canadian journalists failed to do: hold Carney accountable. In a televised interview watched by millions, Washington cornered Carney into admitting that:
- Trump never seriously threatened Canada’s sovereignty
- Carney had multiple private conversations with Trump before the election
- The King’s visit to Parliament, framed as a sovereignty symbol, was orchestrated by Carney himself
- Tariff fears were exaggerated, and in fact, many exemptions were already in place before the election
When asked why he campaigned on a threat he now admits was exaggerated, Carney shifted the goalposts. He described Trump’s annexation rhetoric as moving “from expectation to desire,” an incoherent statement that confirmed the theatrics were for votes, not facts.

The Sky News interview did not just catch Carney off guard. It revealed a disturbing pattern of reversals:
- On Sovereignty: Carney went from declaring Trump a sovereign threat to praising his diplomatic engagement
- On Tariffs: He claimed Canada’s economy would collapse under U.S. tariffs. Now he claims most goods were already exempt
- On National Defence: He implied the defence relationship with the U.S. was broken. Now he boasts about NORAD cooperation and joint security planning
- On King Charles’ Visit: Framed during the campaign as a sign of independence, the visit was actually requested by Carney
Each contradiction follows a common pattern: escalate fear to gain support, then reverse once power is secured.
The Lapel Pin and the Ego Problem
A minor but telling detail emerged when Carney appeared on camera with the Order of Canada pin, not the Canadian flag. It is a reminder that Carney does not represent the average Canadian. He represents elite institutions and global financial interests.
